You know what, SCREW YOU! *pmdoc-ifies shiren and koppa*
So, Shiren 6 is coming this January/Febuary (depending on where you live in the world), and well. I'm pretty hyped! It's been a while since we got any new original Mystery Dungeon game from Spike Chunsoft! And while I have SOOOO much more brainrot over PMD than shiren, more MD from daddy chunsoft is always great!
This kinda came to me in one of my college class daydreams. and now, I finally got time to finish this!
Feel free to share around, just link back to me.

The (printed) collection
From time to time I get a question like, "do you have this or that book?" So, a few weeks back, I finally took them all out of their hiding place and grabbed some photos. Wish I had used my camera instead of phone, I had to stand on a chair to get it all and yeah, the picture is not the sharpest.
Anyway, I have some other stuff, figures and such, although I admittedly DO focus more on books as an artist/writer/translator. These books are the ones I translate from so I wasn't going for mint conditions, although a few of them are. You can see some of them still packed in the store bags. I included the CDs cause... well, they were next to the books and they do have some printed material as well.
The Shiren Suiki book gets a separate photo cause after taking the photos at home I realized I had left it at work when I scanned it... practically crying as I did cause it was barely opened when I bought it and it's a beautiful book. My Anvils are also very fragile.
I may do a complete list one day but for now, here are the quick descriptions.
ARTBOOKS & FANBOOKS I have pretty much all of the major official books I think, missing maybe 1-2 pieces. The one that may look less familiar is Hiroshi Osaka's personal artbook. I also have four of the relevant Nobuteru Yuuki artbooks. The bottom right one with the orange title is the issue of Newtype Magazine with a feature about Esca.
SMALLER BOOKS (let's pretend that's a category) Here I got all the novels (they are out of their sleeves cause I was working on them), all the filmbooks, Secrets of Escaflowne, Escaflowne Bible, and the Energist Memories manga/doujin collection.
DOUJINSHI I was mostly going for stuff I haven't seen online so I only got a handful. Besides the Shiren Suiki book, there are three Minato Tajima doujins (one of them is racy heh but I'm not hiding that I have it). One of the other doujins may look unfamiliar; it's a compilation book that includes other series (the character on the cover is from DN Angel). People who talk to me on Discord probably recognize the Nanoka doujinshi cover.
CDs AND THE LIKE I don't have all the soundtracks for some reason, probably cause I thought the missing ones wouldn't be hard to get. The PSX game is the special edition with the tarot cards. The LDs that I literally bought just for the covers and inlays. I also have all the audio dramas, some CDs with extras... and a phone card that was for some reason packed in a CD case lol (kidding, it's precious that they would give it that kind of protection). Oh, and there are two movie posters which I guess don't fall under either category.
I have some other stuff that is kinda related to Esca "by association" such as by artist or things that "looked similar" but I didn't include them. Also the figures. I may update this post with those but this is the brunt of it. I will be posting some goodies from these soon!
Same goes for the ongoing translations that I've been doing updates on in this post. Life is too short to delay them for months and years because of perfectionism, or rather, being self conscious about one's imperfect language skills. I am thankful to everyone who has helped me so far, proofreading my translations (coverteyes, pikafwance, sevenstars, and radical-rad1986)... I'm not tagging you guys but know that I'm VERY grateful, also to the other people who are helping me with other projects). I always had fun working together with you but it's no longer sustainable and I likely bit off more than I can chew. So I will get myself out of the way. There are two books that are almost complete as of today so I will just probably go chapter by chapter. I hope to be done with this asap but also December is a busy month for me so I'm not sure how smoothly it will go. Let's hope it does.

Shiren: The obvious statement that people who compose music would overwhelmingly benefit from studying music theory 1–4 (short ver.)
Japanese links below:
You can view the full versions for 666 yen.
I'll find some kind of way to show people who paid this yen the English text.
1/ I'm Shiren.
While I wasn't looking at Twitter, it seems "music theory" became a topic 😳 Well, it's the usual discussion about whether it's better to study or not, anyway.
Let me tell you the truth to those who compose music, whether professionally or as amateurs!
Knowing music theory expands the scope of composition more than not knowing it! Sorry for the obvious answer!
As a common opinion among anti-music theory folks, there's the idea that "learning theory will restrict you from creating unique compositions."
They don't understand anything. They're like Sun Wukong, forever in the palm of Buddha's hand...
---
2/ It's Shiren. Today's topic will be tough. Premium content! Oh, premium, huh... lol. This is quite in-depth, and probably even most professional musicians will go, "Oh!" when they hear it.
First of all, almost all music is created following a system that divides the octave into twelve notes (C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B), so ultimately, it's under the control of music theory. Even those who say "I create freely without being bound by theory" are still on this foundation.
So, it's definitely better to have a deep understanding of this twelve-tone division, right? But why did we decide to divide it into twelve tones in the first place? There's a reason for that, a combination of physical basis and convenience of instruments.
---
3/ It's Shiren. Busy with production and live shows right now...!
Continuing the discussion on music theory:
There are physically stable and unstable sounds, and composition is about controlling tension and resolution through their combination. (Of course, it's not the only factor.) Straying from music theory results in extremely unstable use of sounds.
You might think using extreme instability intentionally could work, but it's very limited. Think about it this way: "If someone extremely tone-deaf sings, extreme instability is achieved." Will it become music worth listening to? ... Unless someone highly skilled intentionally adopts it, it won't.
---
4/ It's Shiren. This concludes the discussion on music theory, which got a bit long.
After tackling a difficult topic, here's a metaphor to help you understand.
Considering it's the same artistic field, let's think about it in terms of painting. (I'm not an expert in art, so forgive my mistakes.)
Studying and understanding things like perspective and color theory in art won't diminish artistic expression, right? That's unlikely.

Since I had a wild time translating this very cute cast Q&A (mostly because of Zhang Ruoyun and Liu Duanduan), you all get notes. *I’m still a student of Mandarin, so if you notice anything weird/wrong, let me know so I can improve pls :)
00:00:12
Highly favored by all = Beishou enchong (备受恩宠)= to fully experience favor from the emperor/ruler. Irony given the plot of JoL? Probably so.
00:00:12
Heartthrob = Wanrenmi (万人迷)
Breaking it into parts, gave me:
wanren = a match for ten thousand enemies
mi = crazy about, fan, enthusiast
00:00:19
with a little sister like this, who needs a bike? = 有这样的妹妹还有啥自行车?
I... don’t understand this. My guess is that they’re just saying that Ruoruo is all Fan Xian needs to succeed, but I could be wrong.
00:00:21
Got hurt just laying here = Tangzhe ye shoushang
Breaking this into parts gives an idiom and another phrase:
Tangzhe ye (躺着也), as in tangzhe ye zhong qiang (躺着也中枪), meaning to get attacked just for being present
Shoushang (受伤) = injured, harmed
00:00:23
plastic brothers = Suliao xiongdi (塑料兄弟)
I think this is in reference to suliao jiemei (塑料姐妹), meaning sisters who diss each other
00:00:44
Yellow = Huangse (黄色)
I have two thoughts about why Zhang Ruoyun changed his answer.
1. Some things I’ve read say that in Mandarin, yellow has the connotation of ‘sexual thoughts’. I haven’t seen any sources I’d call reputable about this, but then again, why in the states, do some people refer to ‘naughty’ things as being blue? Regardless, the first option tracks with the little caption the video editors put in there about ZRY being similar to Fan Xian.
2. This isn’t mutually exclusive, but I wonder if he also changed his answer because he was giving away the endgame of season 1. Yellow is the color emperors wear, after all. I lean toward both reasons because they didn’t tease Xin Zhilei when she said Duoduo’s character color was yellow, but ymmv.
00:01:35
free of the stress of the world = kanpobushuopo (看破不说破)
Breaking it down gave me another half of an idiom and another phrase:
kanpo = to see reject the world for a monastic life
shuopo = to lay bare secrets, to reveal
00:01:54
Dog’s tail grass = gouweibacao (狗尾巴草)
I initially thought this one was pretty straightforward. Dog’s tail is a real type of grass. It can/has been used to make braided hats like the ones used in historical cdramas, so the reference to it seemed to track. However, then I wondered why he specifically said Dog’s Tail Grass. The man is an actor not a botanist (presumably? who knows what ZRY does in his spare time), and Xin Zhilei just said grass. She didn’t bother to get specific. Then I realized he might have been messing with an idiom:
huliweiba (狐狸尾巴) = the fox’s tail, or the evidence that reveals one’s evil nature.
And this makes sense later.
00:02:01
a tree that sheds money = yaoqianshu (摇钱树)
Yaoqianshu is an idiom referring to a legendary tree that sheds money when shaken.
00:02:02
A beast that thinks grass looks good, but still eats people = shiren cao zhangde haokan danshi neng chiren (食人草长得好看但是能吃人)
I loved Liu Duanduan before. I love him more now that I know he talks like a person who’s consumed a dictionary.
shiren = a man-eating beast, to oppress the people
cao = grass
zhangde = to look the same, to look pretty
haokan = nice, beautiful, interesting
danshi = but, however
neng = capable of, ability, can
**chiren** is possibly part of the phrase lijiaochiren (礼教吃人) meaning ‘sufferings brought about by Confucian ethics” or it could just be chiren by itself, meaning “exploitative/oppressive
But essentially, what I think LDD is saying is that the second prince identifies with a man-eating beast, to whom grass looks beautiful, but still is capable of would rather exploit and oppress the people.
I sure as hell couldn’t fit all that into a video.
00:02:40
con artist, pretty boy, poisonous = jinguang (金光) naiyou (奶油), duyao (毒药)
I love ZRY but he is trying to have things both ways in this whole interview lol.
Jinguang could be part of either of two phrases:
jinguanshanshuo (金光闪烁) or jinguangdang (金光党)
The first one means spangle. Yeah. Spangle. It doesn’t make sense, unless he’s tying the idea of a “bright and shiny spangle” to the next part where he refers to Fan Xian as being a pretty boy.
Or! He could be calling Fan Xian a con artist, which makes a lot of sense to me because he follows this whole thing up by referring to Fan Xian as poisonous.
And about the pretty boy part:
ZRY only says naiyou. So it was either that he was referring to himself as cream... which is kind of weird or he was referring to yet another four character phrase. In this case, handsome and effeminate man/pretty boy = naiyouxiaosheng (奶油小生).
And! The caption backs up my thought earlier regarding “the fox’s tail” idiom because it says:
kindhearted but two-faced = shanliangyoufuhei (善良又腹黑)
shanliang = kindhearted, good
fuhei = outwardly kind and inwardly evil, two-faced
00:03:21
smart, handsome, elegant = shuai (帅)
Y’all, it’s all the same word. I love Liu Meitong, and I love her joke that also requires knowledge of the dictionary.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you read through my ramblings, congrats. Now you too probably understand why I spent the majority of my time (1) actually just on ZRY and LDD’s parts and (2) why I spent the majority of that time just yelling at the screen lol.
Unlucky Morpheus - Technical Doujin Adepts
Here I am with the final part of July’s themed week in “Focusing on”! Today’s subject is a band whose style hangs between power metal and anime world. We’re talking about Unlucky Morpheus, known also as Ankimo, formed on 2008 and composed by Tenge “Fuki” Fuyuki (vo.), singer of famous Japanese metal bands, such Light Bringer, Doll$Boxx and Dragon Guardian, and also leader of the project Fuki Commune, Shiren (gt./vo./prog.), former member of Yousei Teikoku, Undead Corporation and Babymetal, Jinya (gt.), member of Undead Corporation, Ogawa Hiroyuki (ba.), Fumiya (dr.), former member of Galneryus and also part of Hizaki Grace Project, Jill (vio.), former member of Rose Noire and Denshirenji Tsuyoshi (vo.). The band name’s meaning is not known at the moment, while their concept is an evident mix between gothic atmosphere and the world of anime and manga, as they started as a doujin circle. Their genre is a melodious and technical metal, brought up by the experience of each member, and their discography sees an interesting division between touhou re-arranged works, covering most of their repertory, and their original works,which they started to release in latest years. Their debut occurred on October 2008, with the first mini-album Hypothetical Box, followed by the first album Rebirth, the second album So that a star shines at the night sky, the third album Amazement Park!!, the fourth album Jealousy, the fifth album Unbeatable Accomplice, the sixth album Hypothetical Box Act 2 (reviewed here), the seventh album Byougin kishou (Demon cat), the eighth album Heavy Metal Be-Bop, the compilation U&I Eurobeat Remix, the ninth album Faith and Warfare, the tenth album Parallelism -α & β-, the compilation Best of Dramatic Melody, the second mini-album Miseria Kills Slaughterously, the eleventh album Affected (release which started their original phase), the third mini-album Vampir and the singles Wings, Black Pentagram (read the song analysis here) and Cadaver/Revadac.
The two title-tracks are literally one the opposite of the other, both in title and music, where the former is a paced and techincally rich metal theme, driven by charismatic vocals, while the latter sees a more epic approach, with a major emphasis on guitars; the songs talk about the link between destiny and rebirth and getting back for fixing things respectively. It has been followed by the twelfth album Change of Generation.
The lead-track, named Knight of Sword, is driven by Fuki’s unique voice, which keeps up a powerful melody, enriched by a great instrumental work; the song is about life as a continuous fight, featuring a medieval concept. It has been followed by the thirteenth album Heikou jikuu no ongakkai (Parallel space-time concert), belonging to touhou series, and the original single Takiyasha Hime.
The title-track sees an energetic metal melody, with an interesting folk experimentation, which works quite well, especially with the vocal duet between Fuki and Shiren; the song is based on the Japanese legend of the princess Takiyasha. It has been followed by the fourteenth album Hypothetical Box Act 3, part of the touhou series.
In Japanese musical scene the border between touhou and the other genres has become thinner, allowing more artists linked to a more electronic and animesque world to experiment even with the proper music. Unlucky Morpheus is one of the most notable exemples of this collision, because their work is mainly based on the touhou compositions, reworked in metal notes and giving them a regeneration, allowing the touhou world to become more and more popular. Their talent, given also by the outstanding line-up they built up in the years, led them to compose works of their own and the results has been really good, filled by virtuosism and charisma and improving their status in the Japanese metal scene significantly. In twelve years of career Unlucky Morpheus have grown up a lot, experimenting, going beyond their limits and entertaining a always bigger audience and they won’t stop doing it, as they are still hitting thanks to their latest effort, the fifteenth album Unfinished, fifth full work of originals, came out last month, where their energy and potency is compelling and definitely worth of a listen, as you can read in this review.
Who might enjoy: who is looking for a metal band, whose style lives between touhou and energetic themes.
Recommended songs: Danzai wa amaneku ningen no gen ni, Black Pentagram, Cadaver, Revadac, Knight of Sword, Kizasi and Takiyasha hime.
That’s all folks! See you with the first part of August’s themed week in “Let’s Listen to”!
Thanks for the reading!
